Poor visibility prevents Marlow victory

James Rollison pitching for the Marlow Mariners softball team

The Marlow Mariners made their long awaited Windsor and Maidenhead District Mixed Softball League debut on a wet and overcast evening in South Buckinghamshire as they played host to the BA Flyers at the Sir William Borlase's Grammar School. The dismal weather had already caused problems with the fixture by forcing a late venue change from Marlow Sports club, and it was set to cause more problems for the home team later on.

Just as what happened in Bracknell only a few weeks earlier, the game got off to a rocky start for the home team as they struggled to adapt to playing at a higher standard and in the wet conditions. The Flyers soon took an early lead but the Mariners kept their heads up and fought their way back into the game.

Solid pitching by John Eddyvean and Man of the Match James Rollison kept the BA score down while some excellent hitting by the whole Marlow batting order started to drive up the runs for the home team. Before long Marlow were back in contention, but with an overcast sky causing the light to fade earlier than usual, the game was cut short at four innings.

The final score was 22-17 in favour of the Flyers but the Mariners can take great pride in the way they played and use that to build their confidence for the next game, away to the Hawks at Richings Park.
