The gulf in class between a well established team and the Windsor and Maidenhead District Mixed Softball League's newest club was evident as the Marlow side succumbed to two heavy defeats in a double header against Chalfont Firebirds at the Marlow Sports Club.
The first game was particularly disappointing for the Mariners as they suffered the heaviest defeat in their history – 26-3. Errors in the outfield proved costly as several catches were missed resulting in base hits becoming home runs. Infield play worked well though and pitching was again of a very high standard with only one player being walked throughout both games.
Game two saw an improvement in the Mariners performance and although the deficit was narrower, it was still a comfortable win for the Firebirds. It was observed after the match however that even the least experienced Chalfont player was playing their fourth season compared to the Mariners only being set up six months ago.
The Mariners will need to move on from this defeat, learn from their experiences and develop as a team as they prepare themselves for next week's match against BA Flyers at the Concorde Centre in Heston.
