Single innings again proves costly for Marlow
The batting performance of the Marlow Mariners cannot be faulted as they scored four home runs including two grand slams against the Ascot Blue Jays at Lock's Ride Recreation Ground. Yet again however, it was a single innings that cost them dearly as they ended up losing 30-21 in the Windsor and Maidenhead District Mixed Softball League.
The Mariners got off to a good start as they took an early lead and the scores remained close throughout the game with both sides gradually increasing their run totals. For Marlow, James Rollison scored home runs with two consecutive hits, the latter of which was a grand slam, and this was followed by Natalie Birch bagging herself a home run.
It was a close game until the fourth inning when Marlow gave away 11 runs which proved decisive. It was errors in fielding that proved to be their downfall and this is something that Marlow will need to work on. The one outstanding performance was by catcher Ruth Scott, in only her second game back after injury, who made three catches to perhaps cement herself in that position.
The Mariners persevered and scored yet another grand slam but the lead was too much and the Blue Jays held on for a win.
If the Mariners can make improvements to their fielding and continue with their excellent batting form then they have the making of a very good side and this will hopefully be on display next week when they return to the Marlow Sports Club to take on the Rattlesnakes.
